  • Ken McCarthy organized and sponsored the first conference ever held on the subject of the commercial potential of the World Wide Web. His company Amacord Inc., formerly E-Media, was one of the first Internet-based businesses in the world.

In addition to working with small and mid-sized business clients since 1993, McCarthy was a consultant to NEC's Biglobe, the largest online service in Japan, from 1996 to 2001. His book The Internet Business Manual was the first book on web entrepreneurship published in that country. He is also credited by Hotwired magazine with being one of the people responsible for the development and popularization of the banner ad, one of the key underpinnings of commercial Internet publishing.

A graduate of Princeton University, McCarthy came to the Internet industry with a varied background which included technical consulting for two of New York's top investment banks, lecturing on educational psychology at MIT, Columbia, and NYU, and founding and operating a number of small businesses, including one that helped produce an Academy Award winning documentary.

Yes it really is true...

Someone wrote me saying it wasn`t possible that YouTube was serving 100 million videos PER DAY.

The writer went on to add that that I must have had my numbers mixed up - it must be 100 million a year or 100 million per month - and that I should be more careful with my reporting or I`d lose all credibility.

Well, I`m sorry to disappoint this skeptic, but the number 100 million PER DAY is correct as amazing as it sounds - and I`ll be first to admit, it is amazing.

YouTube with a little more than 30 employees and less than a year old is serving 60% of the Internet`s video and downloads 100 million programs per day.

The numbers come from Hitwise, the web measurement site, and were reported in this article from CNET:

http://news.com.com/2100-1025_3-6094687.html

I still don`t see how this is going to turn into money for YouTube (yet), but it shows that the demand for video delivered via the Internet is real.

Remember, as far as Internet video is concerned, 2006 is `Year One` of the phenomenon. Its all up from here.

Ken- really nice article. Haven't seen much like it. I actually have a different POV on "it's all up from here." I think we're due for a bubble burst. There's so much hype about video, and I think two things will happen in the next 3-9 months:
1) The darlings of video (especially YouTube) will be exposed at being unsound business models.
2) Marketers will probably overuse viral marketer in the flooded attempt to break through.

The online video space feels dangerously like the dot-com era prior to the bubble. Too much money chasing too many companies with too few actual customers or revenue.

Hi Ken,

Great post. What you express in your bullet points are right on. For years, I have been fortunate to be in unique video markets and jobs where I've been able to test and track to see what different audiences respond to and for the bullet points you mention above, you really hit the nail on the head when it comes to video online.

With a well-produced direct response video that can either address concerns, take down skepticism or both while showing the benefits offered, a video can convert because (as you mention above) sometimes video can do things a sales letter can't.

The reason why I say direct response video compared to traditional brand advertising is because on a professional website video, that call-to-action needs to be in there so consumers take action immediately for sales and/or lead generation conversion.

With consumers being hit with hundreds, if not thousands of marketing messages a day, a professional video and message that cuts through the noise and filler of the internet will capture and maintain the attention span of the business owners' target market.

All the best,

Scott Lundergan
