  • Ken McCarthy organized and sponsored the first conference ever held on the subject of the commercial potential of the World Wide Web. His company Amacord Inc., formerly E-Media, was one of the first Internet-based businesses in the world.

In addition to working with small and mid-sized business clients since 1993, McCarthy was a consultant to NEC's Biglobe, the largest online service in Japan, from 1996 to 2001. His book The Internet Business Manual was the first book on web entrepreneurship published in that country. He is also credited by Hotwired magazine with being one of the people responsible for the development and popularization of the banner ad, one of the key underpinnings of commercial Internet publishing.

A graduate of Princeton University, McCarthy came to the Internet industry with a varied background which included technical consulting for two of New York's top investment banks, lecturing on educational psychology at MIT, Columbia, and NYU, and founding and operating a number of small businesses, including one that helped produce an Academy Award winning documentary.

Revenge of the consumer - Episode 1

The Internet can be a consumer's best friend.

Why?

People talk. And on the Internet, they talk in searchable, archived text.  It's a bad faith merchant's worst nightmare.

Here's how this works in real life...

Recently, I was researching successful TV infomercials for the System Video Blog and I was looking for Internet video ads for the guitar sold by "Esteban." I was impressed to learn that nearly 30% of the company's bottom line comes from Internet sales, driven of course by the infomercial.

But a lot more came up that pro-Esteban ads. In fact, I stumbled on a guitar players forum and they had some informed, sometimes amusing, and largely unflattering things to say about the guitar.

For a marketer, a site like this is a nightmare. For a consumer, it's a dream come true.

Whatever side of the aisle you're own (and it you're a truly smart marketer you are on the side of the consumer), this is the future - like it or not. And I say "three cheers."

If you happen to be in the market for a guitar, you'll appreciate the posts on this guitar forum.

Some day someone will create a legitimate forum for consumers of Internet marketing courses. Some people are going to love that. Others are going to hate it.

(If the marketers of this guitar want equal access, they're free to post on the guitar forum. So far, silence. It's possible they don't know it even exists
